Breaking down ‘The Golden Triangle’

The Golden Triangle is the name given to the area of mainland Southeast Asia where most of the world's illicit opium originates. It is located in the highlands of the fan-shaped relief of the Indochinese peninsula, where the international borders of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand run. Myanmar is south-east Asia’s primary opium-producing region, as well as accounting for a quarter of the world’s opium. These illicit narcotics reportedly generate between $1 billion & $2 billion annually in exports. The Golden Triangles’ mountainous landscape is largely governed by armed rebel groups, leaving the government powerless and accused of being complicit in the operation. Economic surveys point out that for farmers in poppy-growing villages, the income generated from poppy crop cultivation is a necessity for survival which illustrates the link between poverty, lack of alternative economic opportunities, and poppy cultivation. Therefore, delegates of this council should strive to come up with actions that the UN must take in order to eradicate illicit opium trading as a whole for the well-being of current and future generations, whilst bearing in mind the UN’s goals, as well as the risks involved.

Evaluating the Proliferation of Gun Control Regulations in the USA

The United States suffers from a gun violence crisis, a predicament intensified by misinformation and a lack of understanding of the epidemic’s dimensions and scale. Data from five years of CDC statistics estimates that 96 Americans die every day from gun violence, with over 33,000 deaths per year. Therefore, delegates of UNODC are asked to work together to formulate long-lasting solutions that would allow the UN to easily intervene in this ongoing arms situation, bearing in mind to prevent failures such as the intervention in the arms race during the Cold war, which was very short-lasting. Furthermore, in order to fully grasp the issue at hand delegates must set out the risks and benefits of the solutions presented, and stride towards producing a plausible resolution for the ongoing arms Proliferation in the USA that has led to more gun incidents.
