Article 13 and the liberty of internet content usage

Recently, the EU has been taking action regarding their control over the internet and its content. Most importantly, it has been focusing on the publishing of content and the rights of the owners over their content and its felonious usage by others. If this law/regulation passes all the social media content and its users will be affected. This will limit the freedom of using content on the internet and will override the fair use policy. Even though the EU is only eligible to limit internet freedom in their region, this will affect the entirety of the internet users. This because social media policy makers and owners will have to change their terms and regulations to suit a more global agenda. Predominantly, 'Article 13' will benefit large corporations which want to have full power on the usage of their content. This emerged as a result of large corporations claiming rights to their content and the concerns regarding internet content censorship. This law will force the platforms to filter out any content which is to be considered out of the fair use frame. Consequently, all ‘memes’ will have to be taken out of the sites and further filtrations of content must be implemented.

User privacy and Facebook’s information publishing

In early 2018, Facebook has faced major backlash after it has been revealed that Facebook has sold the private information of over 50 million users to another corporation named Cambridge Analytica. This has terminated Facebook’s own terms and regulations and has caused a major distrust issue with the platform users. Facebook’s creator Mark Zuckerberg has had to testify for this issue. This has affected the credibility of Facebook’s promises and privacy statements. Large corporations own and have private information of hundreds of millions of people and some, such as Facebook, billions of users. Therefore, serious consequences should be put in place to ensure that privacy of the users as it is part of the user-platform agreement when an account is created.
